Planning around China’s holiday periods and make-up workdays
Separate a festival date from a published break
For China, a festival date, a consecutive official break and a company shutdown describe different things. The calendar shows statutory dates or published holiday periods for the selected year, with adjusted working days marked separately when included. A long break can contain ordinary weekends as well as statutory holidays. The period length tells you how many consecutive calendar days it spans, not how many separate statutory festivals fall within it.
This distinction matters when an overseas colleague sees a long shaded block and assumes every neighboring date is also unavailable. Put the published interval into the shared schedule, but record the supplier’s actual shutdown separately. A factory may give its staff different return arrangements from an office that follows the public notice closely. Ask the supplier to confirm the period in writing, with an explicit first date for accepting new work after the break.
Treat make-up workdays as operational questions
A Saturday or Sunday marked as an adjusted working day should not be treated as an ordinary weekend without checking. In a cross-border team, it may create a working day for one side while the other side is unavailable. Schedule a meeting only after both participants confirm attendance. The public calendar does not establish the work roster of an individual employee, and the presence of a make-up date is not a reason to assume everyone can take calls.
Make the adjustment visible in planning software. Many generic project schedules exclude every Saturday and Sunday automatically; entering the break alone can therefore give a misleading completion date. Review the actual working calendar used by the project before recalculating a deadline. If you cannot configure exceptions, keep a written manual check beside the milestone rather than presenting a mechanically generated date as a confirmed promise.
Work backwards through Spring Festival orders
For a Spring Festival shipment, start with the customer’s required arrival and identify each preceding handover: delivery, collection, inspection, production, materials and design approval. Ask the responsible partner for its cutoff at each stage. One company-wide closure date is not enough if the inspection team stops accepting bookings earlier than the production team stops work. Record the difference so that an apparently finished order does not remain uncollected.
A hypothetical packaging order illustrates the problem. The supplier may be able to finish printing, but the customer has not approved the final artwork and the forwarder has not confirmed space. Calling the production date “the shipping date” hides both dependencies. Assign each approval to a named person and agree what happens if it misses its cutoff. Possible responses include a revised arrival promise or a split order, but availability and extra costs need explicit agreement.
Ask what reopening actually means
The first day after an official break is not proof that a particular supplier has restored its normal lead time. Ask whether it means reception reopens, production restarts, inspections resume, or completed goods can leave. These are different milestones. A useful reopening confirmation names the order, outstanding work and next action, rather than simply stating that the holiday has finished. Keep that answer with the order record so another buyer can follow it.
Avoid assuming a fixed number of recovery days for every manufacturer. Capacity depends on the product, materials, staffing and commitments already made. Ask the supplier to update the order-specific schedule and flag dependencies that remain unresolved. If a customer needs an update before those answers arrive, communicate the uncertainty directly and give a date for the next check rather than inventing a precise dispatch estimate.
Design travel around confirmed appointments
When a trip includes factory visits, administrative appointments or a trade meeting, confirm those appointments before treating travel tickets as the main constraint. Check the address, contact person, entry requirements for the facility and the hours when that person can receive you. A holiday calendar cannot establish whether a visitor appointment is available. Where travel spans several cities, also check the transfer arrangements that connect the appointments.
For leisure travel, prioritize the attractions that require reservations and identify a workable alternative if the reservation cannot be obtained. Read the ticket’s change and cancellation conditions. This page does not provide live transport inventory or claim that a specific route will be less crowded. Use official transport and attraction notices for current operating details, then keep enough flexibility in your plan to handle a changed connection without losing every later booking.
Use the right calendar for each part of the plan
The calendar identifies whether it contains annual holiday periods or statutory dates only. Statutory dates locate the festival; annual periods also describe extended breaks and adjusted workdays. A statutory-only year does not add hypothetical make-up Saturdays or reuse the previous year's break length. For a project involving several partners, keep the public dates separate from each company's shutdown so the team can see exactly which calendar affects a particular handover.
Keep the country and year in the calendar name, and place order-specific production, inspection and dispatch dates in your project schedule. An imported holiday file is a snapshot; downloading a newer copy does not automatically replace the one already in your calendar app. When replacing it, preserve personal meetings and partner commitments in their separate calendars. This keeps the public holiday information easy to update without losing the practical arrangements agreed for your order.
